'Reap & Sow' by Charlotte B. Plumb follows Eda Shaw, a young woman who along with her brothers, has spent decades indebted to a demon through no fault of their own arranging Pacts on his behalf. Having spent decades luring others to further suffering by convincing them to trade years of their lives to make their wishes come true, she suddenly finds herself responsible for causing her brothers to end up in a deadly predicament with no way to save them other than to make a Pact of her own.
For reasons beyond her control, bartering with Mr. Night.. the demon she knows is not an option.. and that leads her on a wild trip through the city, fleeing armed zealots and powerful authority figures.. into the underbelly of a local crime boss in search of another. When she finds Kit'rath, he's nothing like she expected. Well.. almost nothing. Despite the glimpses of demonic tells, he's largely fraught with humanity. Getting him to bargain with her at all is no easy task and it takes a steep cost to tempt him into it, but they both have a lot to lose. Both demons are physically beautiful of course, Mr. Night is wickedly seductive in his ways, always knowing just the right thing to say to prompt others into doing what he wants them to while letting them think it's their own idea. As expected, his Pacts often have unforeseen results, leaving desperate people in even worse situations. Kit'rath however is both beautiful and outwardly surly. If he isn't downright annoyed, he's at least sarcastic, but that's paired with a kind of pleasantly debauched flirtiness that I couldn't get enough of. There were so many times I caught myself smiling at him as I read.. and when he pulls out a touch of earnesty I'm afraid I'd be loathe to deny him much of anything. The magic system, particularly for communicating with the demons, was intriguing and added to the gorgeous gothic vibe of the book. I loved the take on demons and the monotheistic deity, it was a unique surprise and honestly I can't believe I haven't seen it done before. I enjoyed the tense moments and action sequences, both of which were far too much for my heart at times, as I was deeply invested in Eda and Kit. The villains were unpleasant and easy to dislike, and though their plots weren't overly complicated, the solutions were still challenging. Tripp was a wonderful surprise of a supporting character, in a book full of them. Verbally, he definitely had a bit of a Gollum vibe, but he was so funny. Plumb broke my heart a little, then put it back together, only to leave the most dreadfully ominous paragraph at the end.. that I don't know what I'll do if there isn't a second book. But I also don't know what I'll do if there is. Nonetheless, you should all go read this book if you like a romantasy that's just sweet enough. I promise there will be moments you will be overcome with feeling. It's a quick easy read that you won't want to put down.
